Vijay Iyer, Kate Soper, Erin Gee and Ted Hearne at Resonant Bodies Festival

On September 3-5, Roulette hosted the Resonant Bodies Festival. The highly-anticipated annual event, now in its seventh year, is a contemporary vocal music festival that presents today's most compelling vocalists performing repertoire of their own choosing. With associated festivals in Chicago and Australia, the Resonant Bodies Festival has featured more than 55 vocalists, 180 composers, and 95 world premieres during its existance. This year's festival offered a number of exciting performances of music by our composers.

On September 4Kate Soper and Ted Hearne gave performances of their own works. Soper performed Musical Dialogues, an improvisatory piece with longtime collaborator and fellow Wet Ink ensemble member Sam Pluta (electronics), as well as a new piece for voice and piano, Fragments of Parmenides. Hearne previewed a new song cycle set to Dorothea Lasky’s prophetic poetry collection AWE, a piece that was commissioned by Carnegie Hall. Hearne, performing as lead vocalist, was joined by cellist Ashley Bathgate, keyboardist Nathan Koci, guitarist Taylor Levine (Dither), violist Diana Wade, and drummer Ron Wiltrout. The ensemble performed within an arresting and kinetic installation by conceptual artist Rachel Perry.

The September 5th concert included a performance by Vijay Iyer, Arooj Aftab and Shahzad Ismaily. The trio presented a 30-minute improvised journey, blending jazz, indie rock and Sufi minimalism. The same evening, Erin Gee presented selected pieces from her Mouthpiece series, including two solo works in collaboration with her brother, visual artist Collin Gee, and a new work with the Argento Ensemble. Also appearing was opera diva, Stephanie Blythe as her drag persona, Blythely Oratonio.
