68th Ojai Music Festival Features Works by Andrew Norman, Timo Andres, Morton Feldman, Kurt Weill, György Ligeti and Evan Ziporyn

The Ojai Music Festival returns this month for its 68th season with the theme “Music About Music.” Curated by pianist Jeremy Denk, this year’s festival features the Ojai debuts of composers Andrew Norman and Timo Andres. The two share a program on June 14 at the Libbey Bowl, with a performance of Norman’s Light Screens, for flute and string trio, followed by Andres’s Coronation Concerto Re-Composition.

Of Light Screens, Norman writes:

The initial inspiration for this piece came from the light-filled patterns of Frank Lloyd Wright’s art glass windows, which he termed “light screens.” These light screens line the walls of his prairie style homes in long horizontal bands. The window panels feature simple shapes like the square and the rhombus in repetitious designs, and there is often a lively dynamic of asymmetry between areas of intense geometric activity and expanses of largely empty space.

Following the concert, The Knights perform two works by Morton Feldman: Madame Press Died Last Week at Ninety and the landmark Rothko Chapel, featuring the Ojai Festival Singers. Also on the program is Kurt Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins, with The Knights joined by the Hudson Shad vocal quartet and soprano Storm Large. As part of an early morning concert on June 14, Evan Ziporyn receives a performance of his Qi-Garden by the Brooklyn Rider string quartet.

The festival closes on June 15 with a performance of György Ligeti’s Piano Études Books I & II by Jeremy Denk, as well as Andres’s It takes a long time to become a good composer, performed by the composer.
