North Carolina Symphony performs the US Premiere of Olli Mustonen's The Old Church at Petäjävesi

Grant Llewellyn leads the North Carolina Symphony in the US premiere of Olli Mustonen’s The Old Church at Petäjävesi, with four performances of the work beginning November 14.

The piece was commissioned by the Menuhin Festival Gstaad in 2008, and evokes the story of the construction of an historic church in the heart of Finland, which was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1994. Mustonen illustrates the history of the church in each of the works movements: Die Kirchenbauer (The Builders of the Church), Die Berührung des Heiligen (The Sacred Touch), Dämonen (Demons)Der heilige Christophorus (St. Christopher) and Apotheosis (Apotheosis).

The premiere performance takes place on November 14 at the Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines, North Carolina, with subsequent performances taking place at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh on November 15, UNC Wilmington's Kenan Auditorium on November 16, and at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill's Memorial Hall on November 17. Mustonen, who is also an acclaimed concert pianist, joins the orchestra in a performance of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 on the program.
