NMC Recordings Releases Gerald Barry's The Importance of Being Earnest

This month, NMC Records releases the first commercial recording of Gerald Barry’s The Importance of Being Earnest with Thomas Adès conducting the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group alongside a thrilling cast of soloists. The performance, recorded live in concert at the Barbican Hall, features soprano Barbara Hannigan as Cecily Cardew, tenor Peter Tantsits as Jack Worthing, baritone Joshua Bloom as Algernon Moncrieff, mezzo-soprano Katalin Károlyi as Gwendolen Fairfax and bass Alan Ewing in the role of Lady Bracknell.

The Importance of Being Earnest, Barry’s sublimely comic masterpiece based on Oscar Wilde’s beloved play, received its concert premiere by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its first stage performance at the Opéra National de Lorraine. Earnest was awarded the esteemed Royal Philharmonic Society Award in 2013 for Best Large-Scale Composition.
