JACK Quartet and Callithumpian Consort Premiere Works by Chaya Czernowin

Several important events take place this month with a focus on Chaya Czernowin, including two world premieres by the JACK Quartet and Callithumpian Consort. From June 11 through July 10, Czernowin is featured as resident composer at the ManiFeste Festival, hosted by IRCAM – Centre Pompidou in Paris, France. On June 28, Czernowin receives the world premiere of HIDDEN, for string quartet and electronics, performed by the JACK Quartet. Describing the work as “a very slow moving, 45-minute experience transforming the ear into an eye,” Czernowin’s new work creates a striking aural landscape that offers a unique opportunity for sonic observation and perceptual exploration.

Of HIDDEN, Czernowin writes:

The material of the piece moves as if it is under water, devoid of sharp or dramatic gestures or any external drama. It is comprised of a submerged labyrinth of monolithic aural rocks, which are heard from varied distances and angles.  

[HIDDEN] attempts to trace/perceive/sense the very emergence of expression as a preliminary sign of human presence (our need to leave a dent in the world) while registering the vast foreignness of the surrounding which is non-human. As the submersion moves deeper, gradually away from the surface and from the conventions of musical expression, the piece attempts to give a testimony to what it cannot decipher.

Additional performances during the Festival include Duo Leat by Ensemble Intercontemporain on June 28, as well as Lovesong on July 1.

On June 17, Stephen Drury leads the Callithumpian Consort in the world premiere of Czernowin’s Winter Songs IV: Wounds/Mistletoe, for thirteen instruments. The performance takes place at Jordan Hall in Boston, Massachusetts, as part of the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice. Columbia University’s Miller Theatre hosts the New York premiere on October 23, when the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) presents a Chaya Czernowin portrait concert.
