New Version of Dobrinka Tabakova's Suite in Old Style Premiered at La Musikfest Parisienne

The chamber music festival, La Musikfest Parisienne, presented a concert titled "Miroirs" on January 23 at the Philharmonie de Paris. The concert included a variety of works by Ravel, Hillborg, Enesco, Rameau, and Martinu, as well as the world premiere of a new version of Dobrinka Tabakova's Suite in Old Style for solo violin, harpsichord, and strings.

Written in homage to Rameau ("Amareu" being an anagram of his name), this suite presents glimpses from everyday life in an imaginary 18th century aristocratic household: hunting, courting in the gardnes, dancing, and etertaining in opulent surroundings.

A day earlier, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Andris Poga and featuring soloist Ksenija Sidorova, performed the UK premiere of Tabakova's Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra, a work that they co-commissioned with the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker who premiered the work with Sidorova and conductor Michał Nesterowicz in May 2025. The composer describes what inspired her to write the concerto:

"The accordion has fascinated me for a long time - the people’s organ, a staple in a variety of European and world folk music... a black mechanical box, with a breathing center. This idea became the main inspiration for an early student work of mine entitled The Accordion, but scored for an ensemble not featuring the instrument at all. ‘A machine with a soul’ was my working title then, and it was this line which inspired the new concerto, at a crucial time for our humanity. Just as our society is grappling with the concept of technology dictating our cultural nourishment, algorithms and AI trying to replace real connection and curiosity, while our souls long for affection and understanding."
