New Recording by HK Gruber is the Latest Addition to a Surge of Interest in Kurt Weill Symphonies
Feb. 15, 2023
Kurt Weill’s two symphonies continue their ascent. HK Gruber’s long-awaited disc on the BIS label presents the third commercial recording of Fantaisie Symphonique (Symphony No. 2) in the past year alone.
It joins immediate predecessors by Lahav Shani with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and by Jac van Steen and the Ulster Orchestra. Not to be neglected, Weill’s Symphonie in einem Satz (Symphony No. 1) is the subject of a remarkable educational video created by the Berliner Philharmoniker and featuring music director Kirill Petrenko speaking insightfully about the work. Furthermore, the second symphony forms part of a select group considered in a new book about symphonies composed between the two world wars, published in recent weeks by Cambridge University Press.
As a bonus, Gruber’s new recording also features the conductor performing as chansonnier, singing excerpts from Der Silbersee.
