New Publication: Toshio Hosokawa's Sen VI for Solo Percussion

Jan. 15, 2022

The long-awaited publication of Toshio Hosokawa’s Sen VI for solo percussion, is now available from Schott Music.

Sen VI (1993) was commissioned by Isao Nakamura for his solo recital at the Berliner Festwochen on September 24, 1993, and was premiered at Berlin's Philharmonie. The piece has a duration of twelve minutes and is dedicated to Isao Nakamura.

The Sen series is a collection of works for solo instruments composed by Toshio Hosokawa during the 1980s and 1990s. In this series, the composer explores how lines made by the brush strokes used in Eastern calligraphy can be depicted in music, and the relationship between lines and blank spaces. He examines the relationship between each note and space without note or silence as an essential element. The series includes: Sen Ifor flute, Sen II for cello, Sen III for sangen, Sen IV for organ, Sen V for accordion, and Sen VI for percussion.

In addition, Sen VI includes an improvisatory part created to highlight the commissioner's unique talents as a percussionist. Since its premiere in 1993, Sen VI has been performed by numerous percussionists around the world, making it one of the important works for solo percussion.
