Musiqa Premieres Stewart Wallace’s She Told Me This...

Oct. 07, 2010

On October 16, Musiqa performs the world premiere of Stewart Wallace’s She Told Me This..., a monodrama for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble, inspired and adapted from his opera, The Bonesetter’s Daughter. Wallace collaborated with novelist Amy Tan, author of The Bonesetter’s Daughter and The Joy Luck Club, for over four years developing the opera with frequent trips to China for research and work. Wallace writes of this new work:

She Told Me This... re-imagines musical ideas and themes from The Bonesetter's Daughter through one character, Ruth, the American born daughter of a Chinese mother with many secrets. These secrets have crippled Ruth and shaped her life, though she knows nothing of her mother's past. Guided by the ghost of her grandmother, known only as Precious Auntie, she uncovers these stories as her mother's memory slowly fades.

For the premiere performance, the role of Ruth will be played by soprano Zheng Cao, who also originated the role of Ruth in the premiere production of The Bonesetter’s Daughter at San Francisco Opera.
