Musical Focus Day Kicks Off Thomas Larcher's Residency at Wigmore Hall
Nov. 25, 2025
Thomas Larcher's time as Composer in Residence at Wigmore Hall commenced with a Focus Day, comprised of three concerts featuring outstanding soloists and several UK premieres. At 11:30 AM, Quatuor Diotima gave the national premiere of Larcher's String Quartet No. 5 'out of the bluest blue' alongside Ravel's String Quartet in F and an arrangement of Pierre Boulez's Notations I. Fantastique. Modéré, arranged by Léo Marillier. Quatuor Diotima co-commissioned Larcher's work alongside the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Philharmonie de Paris, Wigmore Hall, and the Black Diamond Series, Copenhagen, and premiered it in 2023.
An All-Larcher program was presented at 3:00 PM, featuring four works for various forces: Kracken (piano trio), Nucleus (clarinet, cello, and piano), Lyrical Lights (for tenor and clarinettist), and A Padmore Cycle (for tenor and piano trio).
Finally, at 7:30 PM, Thomas Larcher joined pianist Paul Lewis onstage to perform Schubert's Fantasie in F minor for piano for four hands. The program also included J.S. Bach's Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, BWV106, Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 5 in C minor, Op. 10 No. 1, and Larcher's Poems - 12 Pieces for Pianists and Other Children.
