Music of Wolfgang Rihm Featured at the Lucerne and Salzburg Festivals

Wolfgang Rihm celebrated his 70th birthday this year with performances of his music by numerous performers and organizations. At the Lucerne Festival where Wolfgang Rihm founded and co-directs the Lucerne Festival Academy's Composer Seminar, Riccardo Chailly leads the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in the Swiss premiere of Rihm's Verwandlung 4 on August 12 at the Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Luzern Concert Hall. Additionally, ensemble Recherche will perform Wolfgang Rihm's Chiffre IV on August 27 at the Salquin Saal of the Hochschule Luzern – Musik. Then, on September 3, Sylvain Cambreling leads the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra in the Swiss premiere of Rihm's Sub-Kontur.

The Salzburg Festival also pays homage to Rihm's exceptional career with performances of his music across a wide range of genres including the opera Jakob Lenz, performed in concert on July 27 under the baton of Maxime Pascal. Klangforum Wien, led by Sylvain Cambreling, performed Rihm's Chiffre-Zyklusfor 17 players on July 31. Sylvain Cambreling also led the Klangforum Wien and Cantando Admont in a performance of Rihm's Vigilia for six singers and ensemble on July 23. Finally, SWR Vokalensemble, led by Marcus Creed, performed motets from Rihm's Sieben Passions-Texte alongside works by Carlo Gesualdo on July 24 at the Kollegiekirche.
