Music of Kurt Weill at New York City Center "Encores!" Series, Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York City Ballet

Feb. 03, 2011

Following the acclaimed performances of Knickerbocker Holiday at Alice Tully Hall in January, audiences in New York City have ample opportunities this winter and spring to hear the music of Kurt Weill at venues throughout the city. Kicking off tonight, Kurt Weill and Maxwell Anderson’s Lost in the Stars is presented at New York City Center "Encores!" on the City Center Mainstage. A musical adaptation of Alan Paton’s novel Cry, The Beloved Country about life in South Africa under apartheid and a generation’s call to action, the work is directed by Gary Griffin with musical direction by Rob Berman. NYCC "Encores!" presents four more performances on February 4, 5 and 6.

Beginning on March 3, renowned vocalist Ute Lemper sings classic selections from the Kurt Weill Songbook in a three-night run at Jazz at Lincoln Center and is joined on stage by Warren Wolf on vibes and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Lemper’s performances at Lincoln Center continue the rich heritage of leading artists in the Jazz world, from Louis Armstrong to Gil Evans and more, performing these enduring Weill tunes. The run continues on March 4 and 5.

Finally, this spring, one of the highlights of the current New York City Ballet season, Kurt Weill’s ballet chanté Seven Deadly Sins receives a new staging by Lynne Taylor-Corbett, featuring Patti LuPone in her NYC Ballet debut. Performances begin on May 11 and run through May 15.
