Morton Subotnick’s The Other Piano Premieres in Los Angeles
Apr. 05, 2007

Morton Subotnick’s newest work The Other Piano receives its world premiere May 1 by pianist Vicki Ray in the Zipper Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The Other Piano incorporates a piano and live electronic manipulation of its sound in a surround sound environment to produce a unique musical experience. Subotnick comments on the work:
“It has 4 continuous sections: Alone, Lullaby, Crowds and Rocking. Each section has its own distinct character as well as a special approach to the way the piano sound is processed throughout the space of the auditorium. For instance, Lullaby unfolds slowly with great care taken to the details of exact timing of each note as well as the subtle evolving changes of the melody. Individual notes are captured by the computer and form lingering chords which float through the auditorium.
“The title is a tribute to the memory of Morty Feldman and written for Vicki Ray.”
Elsewhere in April, Subotnick’s Until Spring Revisited sees performances in San Francisco on April 5 and 6, as presented by Asphodel and RML. Until Spring Revisited is performed by Morton Subotnick and Miguel Frasconi on three laptops, with visuals provided by Sue Costabile.
