Mar. 02, 2012

Morton Subotnick’s Monodrama, from Jacob’s Room, the composer’s new adaptation of music from his critically acclaimed chamber opera, premieres on the San Francisco Symphony’s American Mavericks series on March 11 in San Francisco. Commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony, Subotnick's Monodrama is a reworking of two scenes from the opera that provides a new, striking vignette into the internal narrative of loss, terror and personal confrontation with tragedy that is the world of Jacob’s Room. Members of the San Francisco Symphony premiere Monodrama, featuring Joan La Barbara and conducted by Jeffrey Milarsky.
The work travels with American Mavericks to Ann Arbor on March 25, and Carnegie Hall on March 30. The concert at Carnegie Hall marks the final performance on the 2012 American Mavericks series.
Subotnick's original incantation of Jacob's Room was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet who gave the premiere of the work in its first version for string quartet alone at the Cleveland Museum of Art's Gartner Auditorium on October 20, 1985.
