Morton Subotnick in Copenhagen, Sweden, New York, and Beyond
Apr. 01, 2016

Morton Subotnick embarks on a global tour this month with performances of his monumental From Silver Apples of the Moon to A Sky of Cloudless Sulphur: V, as well as works for piano and electronics and the premiere of a new evening-length, site-specific composition. His tour begins at the Jazzhouse in Copenhagen on April 21, followed by performances at the Intonal Festival in Malmö, Sweden on April 23 (with video artist Lillevan) and April 24 (with pianist SooJin Anjou), as well as at Moogfest in Durham, North Carolina on May 20, and Trip Metal Fest in Detroit, Michigan on May 27.
From Silver Apples of the Moon to A Sky of Cloudless Sulphur: V is a spontaneous duet of light and sound, which uses elements of Subotnick’s original analog recordings along with newly developed material. Subotnick writes:
I have 'deconstructed' the original music by breaking the original works into available material for impromptu re-assembly at the concert. The new materials and processing of the re-assembled fragments of the original works are performed on a Mac laptop [using Ableton Live], the original Buchla used in making the works [1965] and the newest Buchla 200e [2011]. The three systems are inter-connected. Lillevan works in a very similar way with the visual materials so that the performances are truly an improvisational duet. Each 'revisit' is a unique performance.
On May 7, Subotnick sees the premiere of Song, commissioned by and designed for the Knockdown Center in New York. The evening-length work features live electronics, performed by Subotnick, diffused into the performance space by 3D speaker arrays created by acoustic engineer Paul Geluso, along with live performance by the Ne(x)tworks Ensemble. The premiere is preceded by a quadraphonic sound performance/installation of Joan La Barbara’s Cyclone, for voices, percussion and Arp 2600 synthesizer sounds.
