Morton Subotnick Celebrates 90!

Morton Subotnick celebrated his 90th birthday on April 14. Earlier this month, Subotnick performed his recent work As I Live and Breathe, an interactive light-and-sound work created with the Berlin-based video artist Lillevan, at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN. The composer has said of the work:

“As I Live and Breathe features live and sampled vocalizing along with some of my most advanced electronic performance techniques. At last, some Buchla modules are now digital plugins and Ableton Live has evolved into a form that will allow me to create a technological environment that I never expected, in my lifetime, to experience. It starts with my breath, moves through a vocalizing cadenza of vocal gestures and ends with a tender and simple use of gentle rhythms and melodic fragments.”

In addition, on April 23, a special celebration of Morton Subotnick's 90th birthday will take place at Roulette Intermedium. The evening will include performances of excerpts from his compositions and music from his seminal works (Silver Apples, Butterflyseries, Wild Bull, etc.). The event is "a collective celebration of Mort Subotnick’s 90th birthday, from friends, family, former students, and those who have been significantly influenced by his music and innovations."
