Midori Performs Takemitsu at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater
Jan. 31, 2008
World renowned violinist Midori performs Toru Takemitsu's Between Tides at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater on Wednesday, February 13 at 8:00 PM. Performing the work with cellist Johannes Moser and pianist Marc-André Hamelin, Midori comments on the inspiration provided by Takemitsu's work:
A master composer of the 20th century, Toru Takemitsu's music offers an extraordinary perspective of the recent past. I have always been inspired by his life's story, particularly his reconciliation of his own Japanese heritage with the Western classical style in which he was immersed for so long. The influences of both cultures are strikingly visible in his music, distinguishing Takemitsu as a uniquely global voice.
With Between Tides, Takemitsu aims to suggest the movement of the ocean with slow moving change, ceaselessly fading in and out, but without dramatic contrast. Between Tides was commissioned for Pamela Frank, Yo Yo Ma, and Peter Serkin and was premiered at the Berlin Festspiele in September, 1993. Takemitsu's A Way a Lone is also included in the evening's program and will be performed by the Miró Quartet. Midori returns to the Rose Theater on May 4 in a program featuring Takemitsu as well as works by Ravel, Schnittke and Bach. Following the February 13 performance, Midori and the Miró Quartet bring their program to the Kennedy Center's Family Theater in Washington D.C. on February 14 as part of the two-week long festival Japan! Culture and Hyperculture. The festival includes a special tribute concert in honor of Takemitsu curated by the composer's daughter, Maki Takemitsu, which takes place on Saturday, February 9 at 7:30 PM.
