Matthias Pintscher <em>idyll</em> with the Utah Symphony

On March 4 and 5 Matthias Pintscher leads the Utah Symphony in a performance of his recent orchestral work idyll. Written for the 80th birthday of a friend and mentor who passed away, and premiered by The Cleveland Orchestra in 2014, Pintscher sought to compose a sort of “tombeau,” extrapolating ideas from his piano work on a clear day into an orchestral setting. Pintscher writes that “the piece is about the breathing of resonances, about fading away – with the whole sense of longing associated with this.”

idyll is scored for large sections of winds, brass and strings, along with two harps and a substantial battery of percussion distributed among five players. Pintscher describes the result as “a music of great brightness and lightness…supported by perspective and hope. As in a dream of being a bird or being weightless, it is about a longing for lightness, about visions of light, inspiration and clear forms.”
