Canadian Premiere of Matthias Pintscher's Ex Nihilo with Orchestre Symphonique de Québec

On March 26, Matthias Pinchter leads the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec in a program called “Tradition and Modernity”, featuring the Canadian premiere of his own Ex Nihilo, for chamber orchestra.

Ex Nihilo (meaning “From Nothing”) is inspired by the experience of disorientation upon waking in an unfamiliar place, like a dark hotel room in a foreign city. The work exploits a diverse palette of pitched and unpitched sounds performed throughout the orchestra, including whispers, groans, and distant mutterings. Following the 2012 premiere with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, The Guardian’s Kate Molleson praised the work:

… Pintscher's handling of the orchestra is so inventive it borders on acousmatic. The effect is urban, nocturnal – very New York, with its sharp angles and harnessed frenetic energy.

The concert is hosted at the beautiful Palais Montcalm in Quebéc, Canada.
