Pintscher Leads The Juilliard Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall

Matthias Pintscher conducted The Juilliard Orchestra on November 5 at Alice Tully Hall in New York through a program that included the composer's own Osiris. Premiered by Pierre Boulez and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and co-commissioned by the CSO, the London Symphony and Carnegie Hall, Osiris sprung from the composer’s fascination with the Egyptian Osiris myth in which, following the god Osiris’ murder, his wife Isis gathers his fragmented body parts and reassembles him through the pulsating of her wings. Pintscher interprets this as an allegory for artistic creativity and an embodiment of the themes of growth and decay to which he creates a vast blend of intricate musical design. The New York Times’ Bernard Holland remarked at the premiere:

Osiris plays out like an encyclopedia of orchestral possibility. One short episode after another explores combinations of sound. Noteworthy are the variety, brevity and sheer number of musical ideas. If Carnegie Hall were a restaurant, Osiris would be like a tasting menu of considerable length: a high-end chef tweaking the imagination with unlikely and startling combinations of ingredients.

The Chicago Tribune’s John von Rhein adds:

Osiris is extraordinarily well-made music that reveals real harmonic integrity beneath its glistening, whispering surfaces. Pintscher savors delicate restraint and exults in coloristic subtlety. Pintscher is a distinctive musical voice who merits the acclaim he's been getting in many quarters of the music world.

The performance marked Pintscher’s first appearance leading The Juilliard Orchestra.
