Matthias Pintscher Conducts Rihm, Henze and Pintscher at the New World Symphony

On March 30, Matthias Pintscher leads the New World Symphony in a thrilling selection of works from the past 20 years featuring Wolfgang Rihm’s Will Sound, Hans Werner Henze’s Symphony No. 8 and Pintscher’s own cello concerto Reflections on Narcissus with Joshua Roman as soloist. Rihm’s Will Sound was commissioned by Carnegie Hall for the ensemble Alarm Will Sound and conducted at its Carnegie Hall premiere in 2006 by Alan Pierson.

Of the piece, Rihm writes:

Something will sound because it wishes to sound. The composer acts upon its will to be and notes down the spaces in between. There emerges a form, which is the imprint of the energy that demands a form for itself. An imprint? Yes, a trace, a coagulated shadow. Just as this text is an imprint of the will not to write it. I don't understand this. Just as well... It's better to listen to the piece. It is short. It will sound...

Henze’s Symphony No. 8 was completed in 1993 for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The work, in three movements, is based on select incidents from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Oberon’s travelling instructions to Puck, the love scenes between Titania and Bottom, and Puck’s peroration. Henze considered his Symphony No. 8 to be a “summer piece” – “not at all tragic or moody like the Seventh.” Seiji Ozawa led the world premiere of the Symphony No. 8 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in October of 1993.

Pintscher’s cello concerto, Reflections on Narcissus, is the composer’s second examination of the Narcissus myth, preceded by his 1992 work for cello and ensemble, La Metamorfosi di Narciso. Composed in five continuous movements, Reflections was premiered in 2006 with Truls Mørk as soloist with the Orchestre de Paris led by Christoph Eschenbach.
