Matthew Hindson's Requiem for a City Premieres in Sydney

Matthew Hindson’s new work for symphonic wind band, Requiem for a City, debuted last month at Verbrugghen Hall as part of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s 100th anniversary celebration. Australian DJ Paul Mac co-wrote the work and joined the Sydney Conservatorium Wind Orchestra and American conductor John Lynch on bass synth.

Requiem for a City is an homage to the waning nightlife and dance culture in Sydney as a result of regulation and gentrification. The work is a brilliant addition to the concert band repertore; a pulsing and vibrant piece highlighted by woodwinds with lyrical gestures layered on top of one another. This layering creates a bright and exuberant texture, anchored by the low hum of the bass synth and driven by percussive elements throughout the ensemble.

You can view a performance of the work’s first movement at youtube.com.
