Matthew Hindson's Maralinga in US Premiere with Lara St. John and Ensemble LPR

On June 27, Australian composer Matthew Hindson’s violin concerto Maralinga has its US premiere with Lara St. John and Ensemble LPR at the Historic Naumburg Bandshell in New York’s Central Park. Hindson, who has been praised for his eclectic compositional style ranging “from classical to Metallica" (San Francisco Chronicle), orchestrated his original violin and piano version of Maralinga in 2011 on commission from the Australian Chamber Orchestra and St. John.

Maralinga references the long and turbulent aboriginal history of the Maralinga area in the South Australian desert, particularly regarding the series nuclear tests that were conducted in the region between 1953 and 1963. Hindson notes that “the Australian aboriginal word Maralinga may sound quite beautiful to people outside of Australia, but to Australians its connotations are much more sinister.”

The original version of the work was commissioned by the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia and which St. John premiered with pianist Alexander Madzar in 2009. St. John has previously collaborated with Hindson in the US and Canadian premieres of his Concerto for Violin (Australian Postcards), which she recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on Ancalagon Records.

David Handler conducts the US premiere performance of Maralinga on June 27, which will be broadcast live on WQXR Radio.
