Matthew Hindson’s Technologic 145 in US Premiere
Oct. 05, 2011

Audience members are in for a treat when Matthew Hindson’s kinetic, unbound Technologic 145 receives its US premiere on October 14 with the Musique 21 contemporary music ensemble of Michigan State University.
Earning the composer the 1998 Australian Broadcasting Corporation Young Composers Award, Technologic 145 is a three-movement, 14-minute work for 13 players, and was premiered by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra's 20th Century Ensemble. As the title suggests, Technologic 145 is influenced by aspects of techno music, particularly its repetitive structures and driving rhythms. Hindson comments:
The extent of the repetition is going to be different in an acoustic concert piece because people are sitting down in seats actively listening to the music, rather than using it as a conduit to pronounced physical movement.
The first movement is a slow-moving, grinding introduction, which features a didjeridu-like cello solo. The second movement is an energetic and vibrant work featuring virtuosic and rhythmic playing from most members of the ensemble. The final movement acts as a slower, more contemplative summary.
