New Production of Mark-Anthony Turnage's Greek at the Deutsche Oper Berlin
Aug. 08, 2022
On August 27, Deutsche Oper Berlin presents a new modern-day production of Mark-Anthony Turnage and Jonathan Moore's opera, Greek. Performances, directed by Pinar Karabulut and conducted by Yi-Chen Lin, run through September 8 and take place outdoors at the parking deck of the Deutsche Oper. Dean Murphy will sing the role of Eddy. Additional cast members include Heidi Stober, Irene Roberts and Seth Carico.
Turnage’s opera, based on the stage play by Steven Berkoff, transports Sophocles's mythological tale of Oedipus to London’s East End of the 1980s, which is plagued by police violence, racism, and socioeconomic decay. The score deftly enhances the vitality and turbulence of the text with its infusion of jazz and rock. Originally commissioned by Hans Werner Henze for the 1988 Munich Biennale, Greek put Turnage on the world stage, with the many productions that followed quickly establishing his international reputation.
