Major Productions of Kurt Weill's Die Dreigroschenoper Run Concurrently In Europe

May. 25, 2023

The month of May saw five prominent productions of Kurt Weill and Bertholt Brecht's Die Dreigroschenoper running concurrently in major European cities, with three more on the horizon. Two highly successful ones, in Berlin and Vienna respectively, continue after premieres only a few weeks apart during the previous season: Barrie Kosky’s at the Berliner Ensemble and Torsten Fischer’s at the Theater in der Josefstadt. Warsaw’s Stary Teatr and Budapest’s József Attila Theater each premiered productions this season; Ersan Mondtag directed in Poland, Bertalan Bagó in Hungary. Back in Germany, the St. Pauli Theater in Hamburg brought out its own completely new production, directed by Peter Gordon.

July’s Festival d’Aix-en-Provence premiere of Thomas Ostermeier’s production will be next. Introducing a new French translation of the work, the Aix production transfers in the fall to La Comédie-Française in Paris for an initial run of more than 60 performances. Next fall brings two further important productions, by Staatschauspiel Dresden (directed by Volker Lösch) and Swedish National Theater in Stockholm (Sofia Adrian Jupither). These productions, individually and together, demonstrate howpowerful and relevant Die Dreigroschenoper remains, and how much it continues to fascinate and challenge, ninety-five years after its first performance.
