Lincoln Center and New York Philharmonic Announce US Premieres of George Benjamin's <em>Written on Skin</em> and Gerald Barry's <em>The Importance of Being Earnest</em>

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the New York Philharmonic, as part of a new partnership to present fully staged productions of contemporary operas, announce the US premiere productions of George Benjamin’s Written on Skin and Gerald Barry’s The Importance of Being Earnest.

The partnership begins in August with the first US staged production of Written on Skin, which received its world premiere in 2012 at the Festival d’Aix en Provence, starring soprano Barbara Hannigan and baritone Christopher Purves. Following its US concert premiere at Tanglewood in 2013, The New York Times hailed the work as “a psychologically gripping, emotionally heart-pounding and viscerally satisfying drama.” The Lincoln Center/New York Philharmonic presentation, a revival of the premiere production directed by Katie Mitchell, takes place as part of the 2015 Mostly Mozart Festival on August 11, 13 and 15 at the David H. Koch Theater.

On June 2 and 4, 2016, Gerald Barry’s The Importance of Being Earnest receives its US premiere production at the Rose Theater as part of the second New York Philharmonic Biennial Festival and Lincoln Center’s 50th season of Great Performers. Ramin Gray directs the production, which debuted at the Royal Opera House in 2013. The work, a sublimely comic masterpiece based on the play by Oscar Wilde, has been praised as “utterly irresistible” (The Guardian) and garnered the coveted RPS Award in 2013 for Best Large-Scale Composition.
