Let the 2010/11 Season Begin!

The new performance season is upon us and once again features a wide range of music by composers in the Schott/EAM family. Following is a selective list of events happening around the world. Thomas Adès

  • In honor of the opening of the New World Symphony's state of the art concert venue designed by Frank Gehry in Miami, Florida, Thomas Adès has been commissioned to write a new work for orchestra with video component by Tal Rosner which premieres on January 26. Co-commissioners for the work include the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, New York Philharmonic, The Barbican Centre, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, and the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
  • Adès' second string quartet, The Four Quarters, premieres at Carnegie Hall on March 12 with the Emerson String Quartet.
    • The Los Angeles Philharmonic's Spring 2011 Adès tribute begins with the west coast premiere of his second string quartet, The Four Quarters on March 14. Adès then conducts his piano concerto In Seven Days and the new work commissioned by the New World Symphony. Other featured pieces include: Concerto Conciso, These Premises Are Alarmed and Violin Concerto.  As pianist, Adès performs his virtuosic Concert Paraphrase on Powder Her Face on April, 5.

        Julian Anderson

        • The New York Philharmonic's Contact series presents the US premiere of Julian Anderson's Comedy of Change, conducted by Alan Gilbert, on December 17 in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

        Gerald Barry

        • Thomas Adès conducts the world premiere, in concert version, of Gerald Barry's new opera The Importance of Being Earnest at the Los Angeles Philharmonic on April 7.

        Benjamin Britten

        • The Canadian Opera Company stages Benjamin Britten's Death in Venice on October 16. Steuart Bedford conducts and Yoshi Oida directs this poignant setting of Thomas Mann's classic novella.

        Douglas J. Cuomo

        • The American Composers Orchestra premieres Cuomo's Black Diamond Express Train to Hell, led by George Manahan, on December 3.

        Peter Eötvös

        • David Robertson and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra present the US premiere on January 21 of Peter Eötvös' Seven, a memorial for the astronauts who perished aboard the Columbia Space Shuttle.

        Jonny Greenwood

        • The Wordless Music Series is set to give the US premiere of Greenwood's new orchestral piece Doghouse in Spring, 2011 in New York City.

        Jonathan Harvey

        • The New Music Ensemble of Canada presents a composer portrait of Jonathan Harvey on March 4, including the world premiere of Vajra by the gamUT ensemble conducted by Norbert Palej. Also on the program are Harvey's Hidden Voice 2, Wheel of Emptiness, Scena and The Riot.
        • Harvey assumes the position of Michael and Sonja Koerner Distinguished Visiting Composer at the University of Toronto.

        Lee Hoiby

        • Richmond Ballet features Lee Hoiby's After Eden with choreography by John Butler in performances taking place on November 4-14.
        • The Chicago Symphony Orchestra presents Lee Hoiby's beloved A Christmas Carol as part of their holiday gala program conducted by Duain Wolfe, December 17 through December 23.
        • Manhattan School of Music presents Summer and Smoke, Hoiby's retelling of Tennessee Williams’ play, at the Borden Auditorium on December 8, 10 and 12.
        • This Is the Rill Speaking comes to John Hopkins University in February, and New York City’s Chelsea Opera in June.

        Kamran Ince

        • Kamran Ince's new opera Judgment of Midas sees a concert reading and recording with Turkey's Bilkent Symphony Orchestra and American Opera Projects on January 15 in Ankara, Turkey. The new opera is under development with American Opera Projects who has produced three workshops thus far. Based on historic mosaics from ruins in ancient Turkey and the stories about them by the prolific Roman poet, Ovid, the opera celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis
        • The Invasion, a new work for chamber orchestra and part of the larger Gallipoli Symphony (a commissioned symphony-in-progress in to which several composers will contribute) premieres at Gallipoli, Turkey on April 25, presented by the Canberra International Music Festival.
        • Ince has a new choral work commissioned by Donald Nally's The Crossing in Philadelphia to be premiered in June, 2011. The work is to be based on the writings of the playwright Seneca.

        Metropolitan Opera

              • Alban Berg's masterpiece Wozzeck and Modest Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, run in repertory at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

              New York City Opera

              • NYCO presents Morton Feldman's incomparable monodrama Neither as part of its program of Monodramas that includes John Zorn's La Machine de l’être and Schoenberg’s Erwartung, March 25 through April 8. Also this season Oliver Knussen'sWhere the Wild Things Are is part of NYCO's 'Opera in the Schools' project in 2011, with performances of the opera in over 40 schools across the five boroughs of New York City.

              Andrew Norman

              • The Grand Rapids Symphony premieres Norman's The Great Swiftness on September 23 under John Varineau.
              • Andrew Norman assumes the position of Composer for the City of Heidelberg for the 2010/11 season. The honor includes a performance of his Drip Blip Sparkle Spin Glint Glide Glow Float Flop Chop Pop Shatter Splash on the Heidelberg Philharmonic's opening concert on September 29 and October 1. His new commission from Heidelberg, a concerto for theremin and orchestra, debuts on April 13, conducted by Cornelius Meister.
              • John Adams conducts a new work for sinfonietta with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic on May 24 on the Green Umbrella series.
              • The Calder Quartet premiere Norman's new string quartet, ...toward sunrise and the prime of light... at the inauguration for the new president of the University of Southern California on October 15.
              • Gabriel Kahane debuts a new song for piano and voice at the MATA Festival on November 14.
                • Norman has also been named Boston Modern Orchestra Project's Composer-in-Residence for the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons.
                • Utah's Nova Chamber Music Series premieres a newly-revised version of Norman's string trio Music in Circles on November 14.

                  Arvo Pärt: 75th Birthday

                  The Estonian composer celebrated his 75th birthday on September 11 and is honored with performances around the world.

                  • Pärt's music plays a central role in Lincoln Center's White Light Festival from October 28 to November 18. The Tallis Scholars perform Sieben Magnificat Antiphons, Nunc dimittis, and Magnificat on November 7. On November 13 the Latvian National Choir perform Stabat Mater
                  • In spe for brass quintet and string orchestra premieres on September 9 at the Vale of Glamorgan Festival in Wales and the Orchestre de Paris premieres Silhouette for string orchestra and percussion on November 4.
                  • Pärt's music sees an abundance of performances across the US and Canada this season including his Symphony No. 4 at the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra on October 15. Other performances this season include those by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Boston Conservatory of Music, Topeka Symphony, Gulf Coast Symphony, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

                    Tobias Picker

                    • Tobias Picker's new ballet Awakenings sees its premiere by the Rambert Dance Company at the Lowry in Salford, UK on September 22. The performance kicks off a fall and spring tour of cities all over the UK, with over 20 performances in the fall alone.
                    • Fantastic Mr. Fox, Picker’s adaptation of the beloved children’s novel by Roald Dahl fresh off a world premiere run in its new chamber version at London’s Opera Holland Park, is scheduled for a slew of performances in the UK by the English Touring Opera beginning on March 10 through May 28.

                    Matthias Pintscher

                    • Matthias Pintscher leads The Cleveland Orchestra through his cello concerto Reflections on Narcissus on November 4.
                    • Pintscher’s music is also heard this year at the National Symphony Orchestra as Christoph Eschenbach leads performances of his Hérodiade–Fragmente on September 30.
                    • Pintscher reprises his new work Songs from Solomon's Garden at the Curtis Institute of Music on January 26.

                    Bernard Rands

                    The composer's 80th birthday season approaches in 2013/14. This season alone sees four world premieres of new works:

                    • Riccardo Muti and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut Danza Petrificada on October 14, with three additional performances in Chicago.
                    • The Seattle Symphony and Gerard Schwarz premiere Adieu as part of Maestro Schwarz's farewell commissioning project on December 7.
                    • Pianist Jonathan Biss premieres Three Pieces on December 3 in Mainz, Germany. The US premiere follows on January 21 at Carnegie Hall. Biss will also perform the work, commissioned by Music Accord, on tours throughout the US and Europe.
                    • Vincent, the composer's new opera based on the life of Vincent van Gogh, sees its long-awaited premiere on April 8 at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, who commissioned the new opera. The production is conducted by Arthur Fagen and directed by Vincent Liotta.

                    Wolfgang Rihm

                    • Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic premiere Wolfgang Rihm's new Violin Concerto with soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter on November 18 at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall.

                    Joseph Schwantner

                    • Rhiannon’s Blackbirds, Joseph Schwantner's brilliant work composed in 2006 for eighth blackbird, sees its European premiere on November 22 by the Holst Sinfonietta in Freiburg, Germany. In February, the Enigma Ensemble presents the Spanish premiere of the work in Zaragoza, Spain.

                    The Seattle Symphony

                    • In honor of music director Gerard Schwarz's farewell season, the Seattle Symphony has commissioned 18 new works by leading American composers to be premiered throughout the 2010/11 season, including Bernard Rands, Joseph Schwantner and Robert Beaser. The time table of these premieres is as follows:
                    • Joseph Schwantner: The Poets Hour…, September 23–26
                    • Bernard Rands: Adieu, December 7
                    • Robert Beaser: New Work, February 17-19

                    Mátyás Seiber

                    • Leon Botstein and the American Symphony Orchestra perform the US premiere of Mátyás Seiber’s cantata Ulysses on October 6.

                    Howard Shore

                    • Howard Shore's new piano concerto Ruin and Memory debuts at the Beijing Music Festival with Lang Lang and the China Philharmonic, led by conductor Long Yu on October 11.

                    Alvin Singleton

                    • BluesKonzert for piano and orchestra sees its New York premiere performed by Ursula Oppens and the American Composers Orchestra led by George Manahan on October 15 at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall.

                    Morton Subotnick

                    • The powerful one-act chamber opera Jacob's Room, coming off a stunning world premiere production at the Bregenz Festival, travels to Dresden for its German premiere on October 1 and to Berlin for performances at the Radialsystem on October 16 and 17. Further performances follow in February, 2011 at the Out of Control Festival in Vienna.

                    Rufus Wainwright

                    • Jeffrey Kahane leads the San Francisco Symphony through the world premiere of Rufus Wainwright’s Five Shakespeare Sonnets on November 11.

                    Stewart Wallace

                    • Musiqa debuts Stewart Wallace's monodrama for mezzo-soprano and ensemble, She Told Me This, inspired and adapted from his opera The Bonesetter’s Daughter, on October 16 in Houston.

                    Kurt Weill

                    • Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny opens at Teatro Real (Madrid), conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado, in a new production by La Fura dels Baus, directed by Alex Ollé and Carles Padrissa (La Fura dels Baus), and featuring Jane Henschel (Leocadia), Willard White (Trinity Moses), Measha Brueggergosman (Jenny), and Michael König (Jim Macintyre), September 30–October 17.
                    • Knickerbocker Holiday comes to Alice Tully Hall with the Collegiate Chorale and the American Symphony Orchestra, directed by Ted Sperling, conducted by James Bagwell, and featuring George Hearn as Peter Stuyvesant, January 25–26.
                    • New York City Center Encores! presents Lost in the Stars on February 3-6, conducted by Rob Berman.
                    • The Seven Deadly Sins visits New York City Ballet, choreographed by Lynne Taylor-Corbett, and featuring Patti LuPone as Anna I, May 11–15.
                    • Street Scene opens at Dresden Semperoper, conducted by Jonathan Darlington, directed by Bettina Bruinier, and featuring Sabine Brohm (Anna Maurrant), Markus Marquardt (Frank Maurrant), Carolina Ullrich (Rose Maurrant) and Simeon Esper (Sam Kaplan), June 19–July 7.

                    Frank Zappa

                    • The Manson Ensemble, the Royal Academy of Music's new music ensemble, perform a selection of Zappa concert works in London's Roundhouse Theatre on November 13 including arrangements by RAM's Head of Composition Philip Cashian and current composition students. The performance is conducted by Franck Ollu.
