Leos Janácek's Jenufa at Metropolitan Opera with Karita Mattila
Feb. 01, 2007

The Metropolitan Opera is currently presenting six performances of Leos Janacek’s Jenufa, featuring Finnish soprano Karita Mattila reprising the title role with which she wowed audiences at the Met in 2003.
On singing Janácek, Mattila says:
“What fascinates me [in] Janácek are the contrasts and the fact that they are not resolved and remain contrasts. His music is full of abrupt and rough contrasts. It is uncensored, uncleaned, raw, surprising and organic. But he doesn’t use contrasts as a shocking effect just for the sake of it. [He] must have had a deeper understanding of human nature.”
Mattila is joined on by legendary soprano Anja Silja in the role of Jenufa's severe stepmother, the Kostelnicka Buryja, with Jirí Belohlávek conducting. The Metropolitan Opera’s production of Jenufa runs through February 17th.
