Leoš Janáček with the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics

The New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics perform two of Leoš Janáček’s most brilliant and beloved works this month: Taras Bulba and the Glagolitic Mass.

Conductor Jakub Hruša leads the New York Philharmonic in an all-Czech program from May 25 to 27, including Janáček’s vibrant Taras Bulba. Though he called the work a “Rhapsody for Orchestra,” Janáček’s symphonic retelling of Nicolai Gogol's story is truly an orchestral suite in three parts. The work exemplifies Janáček’s style, a perfect balance of folk music, plaintive and poignantly expressive melodies, as well as moments of delightfully quirky character.

From May 26 to 28, the Los Angeles Philharmonic gives three performances of Janáček’s powerful Glagolitic Mass in its original version from 1927. Gustavo Dudamel conducts the orchestra along with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and soloists Angela Meade, Alisa Kolosova, Ladislav Elgr, and Stefan Kocan. The work remains one of the most original mass compositions to date, which Janáček composed intentionally as a “joyful mass.” The original version restores many of the work’s most arresting passages and ambitious moments which had been removed prior to performances in Prague in 1928.
