Lee Hoiby's The Italian Lesson at East Harlem Opera

Nov. 26, 2013

Lee Hoiby's The Italian Lesson at East Harlem Opera

This month, East Harlem Opera produces Lee Hoiby’s delightful musical monologue, The Italian Lesson. The production, a double-bill with Hugo Weisgall’s The Stronger, opens on December 6 at the Poet’s Den Theater in New York, with additional performances on December 7 and 8. Soprano Darynn Zimmer stars in the hilarious one-woman show, with direction by Beth Greenberg and costumes by Arielle Harp.

Based on the captivating monologue by Ruth Draper, The Italian Lesson chronicles the hectic activities of Mrs. Clancy, a formidable Park Avenue matron of the 1920’s. The work was premiered at The Newport Festival in 1982 and later produced off-Broadway with Jean Stapleton in 1989. East Harlem Opera’s production marks the first performance of The Italian Lesson in New York in over 20 years.
