Kurt Weill Spring Preview: <em>The Threepenny Opera</em>, <em>Symphony No. 2</em> and more

The spring 2014 season brings many exciting performances of works by Kurt Weill, including two major U.S. productions of The Threepenny Opera. Martha Clarke directs a new production at the Atlantic Theater Company opening March 12 in New York, conducted by Gary Fagin. Virginia’s Signature Theatre opens its production on April 22, with direction by Matthew Gardiner and conducted by Gabe Mangiante. German productions of Street Scene at the Staatsoper Hannover and the Weill-Gershwin operetta The Firebrand of Florence at Staatsoperette Dresden continue throughout the season.

Weill’s Symphony No. 2 receives performances this season by both the New York Philharmonic on March 20, conducted by Jeffrey Kahane, and on May 24 with the Dresden Philharmonic, led by Michael Sanderling. Additional performances by the New York Philharmonic take place March 21, 22 and 25.

Additionally, Patti LuPone takes her “Far Away Places” show on tour, which features several songs by Kurt Weill including “Pirate Jenny” and “September Song”. Select dates include January 31 in San Diego, March 20 in Las Vegas, March 21 in Scottsdale, Arizona, and March 22 in Costa Mesa, CA.

Later this season, Kazem Abdullah leads the Aachen Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Kurt Weill’s Violin Concerto with soloist Kolja Blacher. The concert takes place on April 13 and 14 at the Theater Aachen in Germany.
