Kurt Weill in May

Renowned director David Pountney brings together Kurt Weill’s Mahagonny Songspiel and Die sieben Todsünden and Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, in an imaginative new triple bill at the Opéra national du Rhin. The production stars Lauren Michelle as Bessie in Mahagonny, Anna I in Todsünden, and soloist in Pierrot (alternating with Lenneke Ruiten). Performances run May 20-28 at the Strasbourg Opéra, and then the production moves to the Théâtre municipal in Colmar, on June 5, and wraps at La Sinne, Mulhouse on June 13 and 15.

The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia presents Mahagonny Songspiel paired with Menotti’s The Medium, directed by Emma Griffin, and conducted by Carlos Ágreda for four performances on May 3, 5 & 6 at the Perelman Theater, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia.

Theater Pforzheim presents Der Silbersee May 5-Jun 21, directed by Thomas Münstermann and conducted by Markus Huber. This marks Münstermann and Huber’s third collaboration on a Weill work in consecutive seasons in Pforzheim, having previously presented Die Dreigroschenoper (2016) and Street Scene (2016).

Jeffrey Kahane conducts Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny with the Symphoniker Hamburg at the Hamburg International Music Festival on May 27.

Street Scene returns to the Teatro Real May 26–June 1, with all the stars from the February run: Patricia Racette as Anna Maurrant, Paulo Szot as Frank Maurrant, Mary Bevans as Rose, and Joel Prieto as Sam Kaplan.
