Kurt Weill Featured at Carnegie Hall's "Berlin in Lights" Series

Nov. 06, 2007

On November 8 Carnegie Hall presents the works of Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler as part of its 17-day series "Berlin in Lights", celebrating the history and culture of the city of Berlin. The concert takes place in Zankel Hall as HK Gruber, a true aficionado of both Weill and Eisler, leads the Zankel Band through works of these composers of the Weimar Republic. HK Gruber and the Zankel Band will perform Weill's Little Three Penny Music as well as arrangements of Weill's Öl-Musik and his song Berlin im Licht, among other selections.

HK Gruber has selected Weill's Berlin im Licht as a characteristic work that evokes the waning years of the Weimar Republic while also, with its colors and style, reflecting the erratic and playful feelings the composer felt during the politically charged days of Berlin in the 20's.

Also, on the same night, Neue Galerie New York and star soprano Patricia Racette have come together in a collaboration which includes Weill songs in a Berlin cabaret-style program. Dinner and music will be enjoyed at Café Sabarsky, where the striking lighting by Josef Hoffmann and furniture by Adolf Loos speak of an intricately choreographed evening in the company of what is sure to be an extraordinary set of performances.
