Kurt Weill at the New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra

The new year kicks off with a wealth of Kurt Weill performances, starting with three performances of Weill’s Kleine Dreigroschenmusik by the New York Philharmonic, conducted by music director Alan Gilbert (January 5-7). Following that, the Sinfonie Orchester Biel Solothurn performs Die Sieben Todsünden on January 18 and a new production of Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny opens at Oper Halle on January 21, which runs in repertory through May 19.

Later in the month, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra holds a three week festival, titled “Lift Every Voice,” dedicated to the lives and work of Weill, human rights activist Rabbi Joachim Prinz, and Martin Luther King, Jr. On January 21 and 22, Storm Large performs The Seven Deadly Sins, and violinist Daniel Hope gives the US premiere of the Song-Suite for Violin and Orchestra (arr. Bateman), conducted by Jeffrey Kahane. The festival also includes a chamber concert featuring Weill’s String Quartet No. 1, Op. 8 (January 15), as well as a fully staged production of Lost in the Stars (January 28 and 29).
