Krzysztof Penderecki Composer-in-Residence at Curtis Institute of Music; US Premiere of <em>Sinfonietta No. 3</em>

On March 20 at Carnegie Hall, the Curtis Institute of Music’s Ensemble 20/21 gives the US premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Sinfonietta No. 3 for string orchestra as part of a portrait concert celebrating the composer’s 80th birthday. Penderecki, who is currently composer-in-residence at Curtis for the 13/14 season, conducts the performance. The program also includes his Duo Concertante, Suite for Cello Solo, Sinfonietta per archi, and Sextet for clarinet, horn, string trio and piano. The ensemble gives a repeat performance on March 22 at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia.

Continuing its celebration of Penderecki, the Curtis Orchestra under Ignat Solzhenitsyn gives the US Premiere of Penderecki’s Concerto Doppio for violin, viola and orchestra on April 13. The performance, featuring violist Roberto Díaz and violinist Benjamin Schmid, takes place at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.

In Mexico City, the Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) gives the Mexican premieres of Penderecki’s Sinfonietta No. 2, for clarinet and strings, and Ciaccona for string orchestra. The composer conducts these performances as well, which take place on March 29 and 30.
