Kamran Ince's Orchestral Works Across the Globe

Music of Kamran Ince is heard in performances by several orchestras across the globe this month. On June 17, Ince leads the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra in performances of Symphony No. 4 “Sardis” and select arias from Judgment of Midas as part of a memorial concert for Crawford H. Greenewalt Jr., the beloved classical archaeologist. Greenewalt Jr., or “Greenie” as he was known to friends and colleagues, was the director of excavations at Sardis. Both of Ince’s works on the program were commissioned by Greenewalt and the event takes place on the site of his famous excavations in Sart, Turkey.

On July 31, David Alan Miller leads the Gulbenkian Orchestra in a performance of Ince’s Symphony No. 2 “Fall of Constantinople” at the Estorilisbon Festival in Lisbon, Portugal. Commissioned by the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the subject of the symphony is the events surrounding the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks in 1453.

Albany Records has recently released a recording of Ince’s chamber music, title Asumani. The CD features performances of eight chamber works spanning over a decade of creative work, including Asumani, for kemençe and cello, Symphony in Blue for solo piano, Far Variations, for piano quartet, Road to Memphis for viola and piano, Drawings for flute and piano, Two Step Passion for piano trio, and Abandoned, Ince’s recent monodrama for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble.

Later this summer, The Gallipoli Symphony, a large-scale orchestral work for which several composers contributed different movements, receives its premiere in Istanbul. Ince’s movement, titled “The Invasion”, was commissioned by the Australian Government to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the battle of Gallipoli.
