Kamran Ince's <em>Judgment of Midas</em> at the OPERA America "New Works Forum"

On January 14, OPERA America featured Kamran Ince’s Judgment of Midas as part of its "New Works Forum" in New York. The Forum, which included a showcase performance followed by a discussion with the creators, is an opportunity to share strategies for the successful creation and production of new operatic works.

Judgment of Midas premiered in April 2013 in a concert production by Milwaukee’s Present Music, in collaboration with Milwaukee Opera Theatre and University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin’s Year of the Arts. The opera is a vivid reimagining of the epic musical battle between the gods Pan and Apollo from Ovid’s musical drama Metamorphoses. With a libretto by Miriam Seidel, the opera's musical language marries popular, ethnic, and folk musical styles with music of grand proportions.

Judgment of Midas was developed in American Opera Project’s “First Chance” program with funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The work was commissioned in part with a grant from Mr. Crawford H. Greenewalt Jr. to mark the 50th anniversary of the Sardis/Lydia excavations, which uncovered a series of mosaics featuring the mythical contest that forms the dramatic focal point of Ince's new opera.

The OPERA America "New Works Forum" took place at the National Opera Center in New York from January 12 through January 15.
