Kamran Ince's <em>Abandoned</em> Premieres with Opera Memphis

On April 4, the second annual Opera Memphis “Midtown Opera Festival” features the premiere of Ghosts of Crosstown, a series of five short operas commissioned for the occasion and inspired by the lives of those who lived near or worked in the majestic Sears Crosstown building. As part of this project, Kamran Ince sees the world premiere of his Abandoned, a new monodrama with libretto by Jerre Dye.

The Sears Crosstown Building was once a vibrant hub of activity, but fell into decay and was ultimately abandoned in 1993. Scored for alto voice, clarinet, violin, and cello, Ince’s Abandoned is told through the perspective of “an abandoned building speaking to the sun at night”. Jerre Dye’s text invokes a yearning for the sun’s return, to be rescued from nothingness, brought to life by Ince’s use of subdued lyricism and subtly evolving repetition.

Ghosts of Crosstown also includes new works by Anthony Davis, Jack Perla, Nathaniel Stookey, and Zach Redler, with music direction by Steven Osgood. The premiere performance on April 4 takes place outdoors at the loading dock of the Memphis Sears Tower. An additional performance takes place April 12 at the Playhouse on the Square.
