Jörg Widmann Featured at Montreal’s Orford Festival

Jörg Widmann is a featured artist at Montreal’s Orford Festival this summer with performances of several of his works during the festival’s Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (OSM) Week. The festivities of OSM Week last from July 31 through August 8 at the Orford Arts Center in Montreal.

An August 3 chamber music concert presents Widmann’s Air for solo horn, Fragment in C for solo piano, and Vier Strophen von Heimweh for violin and cello. On August 4, Widmann’s Armonica is performed by the Orford Academy Orchestra under Kent Nagano in a concert in which Widmann himself is the featured soloist in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622. On August 6 Mari Kodama performs Widmann’s Elf Humoresken for solo piano before Widmann plays his own Fantasia for solo clarinet and Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A Major, K. 581 with the Pacifica Quartet.

It’s an exciting time to follow this young composer fast emerging as one of the leading young composers of the day. A recipient of the 2008/2009 Elise L. Stoeger Prize from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Widmann’s work has seen performances by the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and The Cleveland Orchestra during the last few months alone. In addition to the Orford Festival, Widmann’s music can be heard this summer in performances by the Leipzig String Quartet, City of Birmingham Youth Orchestra, Klangforum Wien, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bamberger Symphoniker and the Badische Staatskapelle.
