Joseph Schwantner's Silver Halo Given World Premiere by Flute Force at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall

Flute Force performs the world premiere of Joseph Schwantner's new work Silver Halo at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall on January 17. Commissioned by the ensemble with support from the Brannen-Cooper Fund, the work proceeds in three diverse movements: "misterioso", "capriccioso e animato" and "piccante e percussive" The first movement incorporates a separation of musicians as two of the flutists are situated behind the audience and proceed toward the stage in procession. Schwantner explains that, "the initial separation of the musicians creates a "halo-like" environment that helps to define, clarify and frame the discrete flute voices in the sonic space." Schwantner continues:

I find the flute's mercurial voice, its extraordinary dynamic, expressive and technical prowess, endlessly compelling. Silver Halo is the latest in a series of works I have written for flute, others include: Modus Caelestis (1973) for twelve flutes, twelve strings, piano and three percussionists, Canticle of the Evening Bells (1976) for flute and chamber ensemble, A Play of Shadows (1990) for flute and chamber orchestra for the flutist Ransom Wilson and Soaring (1984) for Carol Wincenc.

The performance of Silver Halo by Flute Force takes place in Weill Recital Hall on Thursday, January 17 at 8 pm.
