Joseph Schwantner's Morning's Embrace in St. Louis; Angelfire in Denver

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra will perform Joseph Schwantner's Morning's Embrace October 26-28 with Leonard Slatkin conducting. Morning's Embrace was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra to celebrate its 75th season, and the composer had this to say on his inspiration:

"Morning's Embrace draws much of its spirit and energy from the intensely vibrant early morning sunrises I experience living in rural New Hampshire. I found the powerful kaleidoscope of hue and color piercing the morning mist and trees to provide potent imagery for my musical imagination."

Slatkin conducted the National Symphony Orchestra's world premiere performance of the work in February 2006, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra's performance this month is only the most recent event to follow in a history of successful collaboration between Slatkin and Schwantner. Schwantner's music has figured prominently in the conductor's repertory since he began conducting it with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra in the 1970s. Mr. Slatkin appointed Mr. Schwantner the first composer-in-residence to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and both during his residency (19821985) and afterward commissioned, introduced and recorded several of the composer's works.

On October 4 at 7:30 PM the violinist Anne Akiko Meyers and the University of Denver's Lamont Symphony Orchestra will perform Joseph Schwantner's Angelfire. Under the baton of Alan Golan, the performance comes as the culmination of Ms. Meyers' tenure as artist-in-residence with the Lamont Symphony Orchestra and will take place at the University of Denver's Newmon Center.
