Jörg Widmann Named 2019-2020 Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair at Carnegie Hall

We are delighted to note Jörg Widmann's appointment as the 2019-2020 Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair at Carnegie Hall. During his residency at Carnegie Hall next season, audiences will be treated to many works, performances, and words of this esteemed composer and virtuoso clarinettist across a series of exciting concerts and other programs from October 2019 through April 6, 2020. On October 4, The Cleveland Orchestra, led by Franz Welser-Möst and featuring pianist Yefim Bronfman, performs Widmann's Trauermarsch.

The Munich Philharmonic, led by Valery Gergiev, performs Widmann's Con brio on October 26. Then, on November 19, the Irish Chamber Orchestra, led by conductor and principal clarinettist, Jörg Widmann, peforms his Versuch über die Fuge and 180 beats per minute. On January 28 the International Contemporary Ensemble, led and joined by Widmann, perform a concert dedicated to the composer's works, including Liebeslied for Eight Instruments, Air for Solo Horn, Etude No. 2 for Solo Violin, Quintet for Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, and Piano, Three Shadow Dances for Solo Clarinet, and Freie Stücke (Free Pieces). Next, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Friends perform works by Beethoven alongside the world premiere of Widmann's new string quartet on January 30. On March 28, Widmann’s chamber orchestra arrangement of his Choralquartett is framed by two Mozart piano concertos, performed by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Mitsuko Uchida, led by Meesun Hong Coleman, Concertmaster and Leader. On April 1, Widmann joins violist Tabea Zimmermann and pianist Dénes Várjon in a performance of his Es war einmal...Fünf Stücke im Märchenton alongside works by Mozart and Schumann. Finally, on April 6, Ensemble Connect performs Widmann's Oktett alongside Schubert's Octet in F Major, D. 803.

In addition to these symphonic and chamber concerts, Jörg Widmann will give two lectures. The first "On Dissonance and Beauty" takes place on November 18, and the second, on March 29, is titled "Thoughts on Beethoven."
