Jonny Greenwood's <em>Suite from 'There Will Be Blood'</em> with Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Jonny Greenwood’s Suite from ‘There Will Be Blood’ headlines the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s MusicNOW event at the Harris Theater in Chicago on January 19, conducted by Donato Cabrera. The suite has enjoyed numerous performances in Europe and the US since its premiere at the Holland Festival in June of 2012, including four recent performances in November and December in Belgium with the Het Kamerorkest led by Ning Kam.

Greenwood composed the work for string orchestra as a score to the 2007 Academy-Award winning film There Will be Blood by acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson. The piece is highlighted by a variety of extended techniques and colorful textures, clearly inspired by Greenwood’s compositional heroes Krzysztof Penderecki and György Ligeti. The score also employs the rarely used ondes Martenot, an instrument favored by Olivier Messiaen—another significant compositional influence—that Greenwood has notably incorporated into his rock band Radiohead.

Following the program on January 19, the suite travels to Birmingham, UK on March 6 for a performance with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Seal, and then to Melbourne, Australia on May 16 with performance by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra led by André de Ridder.
