Jonny Greenwood's <em>Suite from 'There Will Be Blood'</em> at Colorado Symphony and Premiere Recording from Deutsche Grammophon

Best known as the lead guitarist of the art-rock band Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood is quickly gaining a reputation as a highly original and sought after composer of orchestral and chamber music. On February 28, his Suite from ‘There Will Be Blood’ receives its first professional performance by an American orchestra when Andre de Ridder conducts the Colorado Symphony at Boettcher Concert Hall in Denver.

Based on Greenwood’s soundtrack for Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2007 Oscar-winning film “There Will Be Blood,” the suite is scored for string orchestra and ondes martenot (or oboe). The work, in six movements, was premiered in 2012 at the Holland Festival with de Ridder leading the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. The US premiere took place in October 2013 when David Hayes conducted the Mannes College Orchestra in New York City. Suite from ‘There Will Be Blood’ clearly exemplifies Greenwood’s affinity for the 20th-century avant-garde, particularly the orchestral masterpieces of Penderecki, Messaien, and Ligeti. The composer sites the early works of Penderecki, such as Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima, as a monumental influence in his compositional style.

The Colorado Symphony’s subsequent performances of the Suite follow on March 1 and 2. On March 3, Deutsche Grammophon releases the premiere recording of Suite from ‘There Will Be Blood’, featuring de Ridder conducting the Copenhagen Philharmonic.
