Jonny Greenwood Film Score Released on Nonesuch; Doghouse Set for US Premiere in May

As American audiences eagerly await the US premiere of Jonny Greenwood’s new orchestral work Doghouse on the Wordless Music Series this Spring, Nonesuch Records offers a hint of what’s to come with the release of the composer’s soundtrack to the film Norwegian Wood on March 8. The soundtrack contains fragments of Doghouse, the composer’s most expansive piece to date, which sees its US debut in New York City with the Wordless Music Orchestra led by Brad Lubman on May 20 and 21.

An adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s bestselling novel, the film sees its UK release on March 11 and stars Kenichi Matsuyama, Rinko Kikuchi, Kiko Mizuhara and is directed by Anh Hung Tran. The score is performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra led by Robert Ziegler, and the Emperor Quartet, and is produced by Graeme Stewart. The soundtrack album also features three tracks written and performed by Can.

Though he manages to stay busy with other projects outside of his own solo compositions, Greenwood continues to cement his status as a formidable force in contemporary music. The score to Norwegian Wood is the most recent in a line of successful instrumental film scores including his powerful, Grammy-nominated score to the Paul Thomas Anderson 2007 film There Will Be Blood, which won the award for Best Film Score at the Evening Standard British Film Awards and the Ivor Novello Award for Best Original Film Score, and the soundtrack for the Simon Pummell film Bodysong in 2003. During his appointment as BBC Radio 3’s Composer in Residence in 2004, Greenwood composed Popcorn Superhet Receiver, which won the BBC Radio 3 Listeners’ Award at the 2006 British Composer Awards.
