John Casken's That Subtle Knot Premieres with Royal Northern Sinfonia
Jun. 03, 2014

On June 11, Royal Northern Sinfonia performs the world premiere of John Casken’s new double concerto for violin, viola and orchestra, That Subtle Knot. Inspired by John Donne’s poem The Ecstasy, the concerto develops a relationship between the solo instruments “through the exploration of independent lines, lines shared, lines in opposition, always with a sense of being drawn together with one purpose.” The premiere features Thomas Zehetmair as both conductor and solo violinist, with Ruth Killius on viola.
Zehetmair and Killius, along with The Sage Gateshead, commissioned That Subtle Knot in commemoration of Zehetmair’s final season as conductor of the orchestra. Following the premiere in England, the husband-and-wife team joins Camerata Salzburg for a second performance on August 6 at this year’s Salzburg Festival.
