Joe Lovano and the Winston-Salem Symphony Perform Douglas J. Cuomo's a raft, the sky, the wild sea

On January 6-7, acclaimed saxophonist Joe Lovano joined forces with the Winston-Salem Symphony to perform Douglas J. Cuomo's a raft, the sky, the wild sea. The program, titled "Enchanted Waters," also included Debussy's La Mer and Ravel's La Valse.

a raft, the sky, the wild sea, a concerto for improvising tenor saxophone and orcehstra, was premiered by Joe Lovano and The Fort Worth Symphony, under the baton of Robert Spano on October 14-16, 2023 at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Texas. Douglas J. Cuomo describes this work:

"The central inspiration for this work is the idea of a journey through the unknown, expressed in two ways. On an intimate level it reflects an individual spiritual exploration; on a global level it grapples with the realities faced by the millions of children, women, and men throughout the world who are forced to flee their homelands in search of a better life."

Douglas J. Cuomo’s a raft, the sky, the wild sea was co-commissioned by the London Philharmonic, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and the Winston-Salem Symphony.
