Celebrating the Holidays with Joaquín Rodrigo

On December 1, the Lexington Philharmonic and Chamber Chorale and Ecco Chamber Choir, led by Scott Terrell, performed excerpts from Joaquín Rodrigo's Retablo de Navidad. In this glorious work, the story of the Nativity is musically retold in eight short seasonal pieces. The varied forces employed provide each section with its own inimitable Christmas flavor. The work will be performed again on December 23 by the Philharmonisches Orchester Hagen and Philharmonischer Chor Hagen, and the Kinder- und Jugendchor Theater Hagen, led by Joseph Trafton.


Additionally, Rodrigo's Concierto pastoral will be performed throughout Germany by the Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn, under the baton of Leo McFall and featuring flautist Gaby Pas-Van Viet on December 12-15. In Concierto pastoral, Joaquín Rodrigo uses a small orchestra with deft coloring to support his soloist and there is a definite feeling of freedom and joy in the outdoors about the work. There are three movements, but the central movement bears the weight of the concerto, as it does in his Concierto de Aranjuez: an Adagio tinged with melancholy which is interrupted by an Allegro in pastoral rhythm announced by the flute and passing in turn to the various instruments of the orchestra in different keys; after a brilliant cadenza for the flute it then resolves into an Allegretto for the return to the melodic theme.
