Japanese Composers Akira Nishimura and Somei Satoh Featured at The Juilliard School's 2006 Focus! Festival
Jan. 01, 2006

As part of the many festivities celebrating the 100th Anniversary of The Juilliard School, the school’s annual Focus! Festival has taken on the theme “New and Now,” presenting only works completed in 2005 from a wide range of international composers. New compositions by composers Akira Nishimura (left) and Somei Satoh (right)will be featured at this year’s festival. Satoh’s The Last Song (for baritone solo, two percussion, harp and strings) has been programmed as well as Nishimura’s Chamber Symphony No. 3, which will have its premiere at the festival. Each work has found its way into the program on common grounds. About Satoh and Nishimura, festival director Joel Sachs comments, “What I admire about both of them is the really powerful character of their sound-worlds, which are extremely personal, and uncompromising in their vision. As a result, their music forges a powerful connection with the listener.”
Nishimura’s Chamber Symphony No. 3 will be heard on January 27 and Satoh’s The Last Song on January 30. Both concerts take place at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at The Juilliard School in New York .
